Päivin kurssit vko 44 (29.10.-1.11.)

ENGLANTI 5

Loman jälkeen kertaukseksi käänneltiin parin kanssa lappulauseita lisämonisteilta, minkä jälkeen puhuttiin sellaisten sanojen kuin always, often, usually (eli epätarkkaa aikaa ilmaisevien adverbien) paikasta lauseessa (s. 25). Sitten perehdyimme Guess what? -tekstin (s. 20) sisältöön ja keskustelimme millaisia naapureita, ystäviä ja perheenjäseniä kullakin on (task 3). Yleispreesensistä (I speak) ja kestopreesensistä (I am speaking) puhuttiin myös (s. 24) ja niitä voi harjoitella lisää täällä: Present simple and progressive. Ääntämisharjoitusta saatiin At a yard sale -tekstistä (task 4). Kotitehtäväksi task 3.

NOW WE ARE TALKING!

Runny nose etc. are symptoms of a cold, and this is what we started the lesson with today while I was wiping my nose and sneezing. More flu vocabulary here: Flu. We also played an Alias-like game to revise vocabulary from past lessons and then moved on to a new theme: fire. What comes into your mind when you think about fire? Are the words positive or negative?

ENGLANTIA EPÄRÖIVILLE – ENGLISH IN THE MORNING

Last week’s theme was continued today: which verb form do we use after prepositions? We dealt with adjective + preposition (aftaid of, angry about, bored with, etc.), verb + preposition (feel like, think of, look forward to, etc.), and not + -ing (I’m afraid of not passing the exam.), and did excercises 1-3 on the handout. For grammar lovers, one more excercise here: Preposition + gerund.

KEEP UP YOUR ENGLISH

As it was Halloween, the origins of the celebration were discussed. More information can be found here: Halloween. Then we took up again the metaphorical concepts connected with ”up” and ”down”, e.g. up and coming, rising star, move up the ladder, bottom of the pile, etc. and did excercises 2a-2d on the handout.

SPEAK ENGLISH EASILY

Naturally, we had to talk about Halloween first, as it was 31 October. Find more information about it here: Halloween. Then we read a text called This Blog is Angry and discussed taking photographs on concerts and exhibitions (excercises 4-5), and completed some questions (7a) using words from the text.

ENGLANTIA PERUSTASOLTA ETEENPÄIN päivällä

Task 3 Holiday destinations -tekstin pohjalta arvuuttelimme mistä lomakohteista mahtaisi olla kysymys, minkä jälkeen keskustelimme näistä paikoista (3A) ja etsimme kaikki positiiviset adjektiivit tekstistä. Niitä voit käyttää kotitehtävässä 3B. Lisäksi pohdimme parin kanssa Where is the nearest mountain/cathedral/waterfall jne, ja olemmeko sellaisen joskus nähneet. Viikonloppukevennyksenä voi vaikka kuunnella kirjan kappaleen 4 mukaisen Fly Me to the Moon -jazzstandardin ja tutustua halutessasi laulun sanoihin tässä: Fly me to the Moon.

I dag fortsatte vi kring temat boende. Först försökte vi ta reda på var de föremålen som vi ”tappat bort” fanns (möbler, prepositioner), sedan pratade vi om planritningar och förstökte ange riktningar för att hitta ett par. Päivin kurssit vko 42 (15.-18.10.)

ENGLANTI 5

Kotitehtävillä aloitettiin ja niitähän oli kiitettävä määrä: erilliseltä monisteelta lisätehtävät 7 a-c ja kirjasta vielä 5c. Sitten olivat aiheina Seasons and months (tasks 6a-c) sekä An interview on 3rd October (task 8). Lisäksi teimme kertaavan sanapalapelin. Lomaviikolla on aikaa tavallista enemmän, joten vapaaehtoiseksi kirjoitustehtäväksi annettiin task 7 (s. 17): halukkaat voivat kertoa kuvasta erilliselle paperille, joka sitten palautuu open kommentein varustettuna (eikä sitten mitään arvosanoja…). Huomasimme myös, että going to –muoto kaipaa hieman lisätreeniä, ja sitähän saa tältä pitkähköltä linkkilistalta, jota voi syysloman aikana muun tekemisen puutteessa kahlata: Going to.

NOW WE ARE TALKING!

More lies even this week! What would you do if you were taking an exam and your good friend wants to see your answers: do you cheat and show the answers or don’t because you don’t want to get into trouble? If you’d like to learn more school rules in English, try this excercise: School rules. What about lying; how can you tell if someone’s lying? We read an article about lie detectors and discussed whether or not they should be used in court cases. The lesson was rounded off by playing the game ”Who’s the Liar”.

ENGLANTIA EPÄRÖIVILLE – ENGLISH IN THE MORNING

The lesson was started off by revising some vocabulary from the handout ”What type of learner are you?”. We also discussed some ideas that might help visual, auditory and haptic types (and the mixtures). Then it was time for grammar: Which verb form do we use after prepositions? Next week there is no class (”autumn holiday”), so why not practice prepositions and verb forms here: Gerund and prepositions.

KEEP UP YOUR ENGLISH

This week we analysed our partner’s personality and habits the Ayurvedic way, discussed his/her diet and gave him/her advice as to what (not) to eat. The new theme was exploring metaphorical concepts with ”up” and ”down”. If you’d like to practice some phrasal verbs with ”up” and ”down”, try this excercise: Up and down.

The topic of the day: Free time. We discussed activities we usually do on our own, with other people, outdoors, indoors, when we are feeling lazy or full of energy (tasks 10 and 11 on the handout). Then we did some predicting before we read a text (1.3., tasks 1, 2), and read a blog called This Blog is Angry (task 3).

ENGLANTIA PERUSTASOLTA ETEENPÄIN

Tarkistimme Stop 1 -kappaleen kuunteluharjoitukset 10 A ja B sekä kotitehtävän ABC Quiz 1. Kielenkantoja kirvoiteltiin lautapelillä, jossa keksimme lauseen alulle jatkon. Uutena aloitettiin Step 4, Fly me to the Moon, josta teimme harjoitukset Going on holiday (1) ja Where would you like to travel? (2) Vapaaehtoiseksi kirjoitustehtäväksi (erilliselle paperille minulle palautettavaksi!) annettiin 2 B. Jossain vaiheessa eksyimme puhumaan linnuista, joiden englanninkielisiä nimiä voit katsoa ja kuunnella klikkaamalla linnun nimeä täällä: Birds in English.

Dagens tema: att presentera en stad för turister. Varje smågrupp valde en årstid och funderade ut vad för slags information de skulle ge en turist under den utvalda årstiden. Vad kan turisterna göra, vilka är typiska hobbyer för årstiden, hur vädret är och hur man ska gå klädd. Vi diskuterade ochså traditionella fester och andra händelser och traditionella maträtter turisterna kan äta. En ny tema påbörjades också: boende. Vi reviderade utredningen i ett vardagsrum, och det kan du fortsätta här: Möbler.

Päivin kurssit vko 41 (8.-11.10.)

ENGLANTI 5

Tarkistimme kotitehtävät erilliseltä monisteelta (vihreä tällä kertaa; 4 imperfektit, 5 adjektiivien vertailu). Oppikirjasta kertasimme kellonaikoja ja tulevaa tekemistä ilmaisevaa going to -muotoa (tasks 4 ja 5a + b). Kotitehtäväksi 5 c. Lisäksi treenasimme paripelin avulla järjestylukuja. Kotitehtäviä saatiin lisää myös uudelta monisteelta (sininen!). Huomasimme, että do-kysymysten tekeminen kaipaa vielä ajattelua ja mieluiten toimintaakin, jota saa tästä linkistä (kysy alleviivattua asiaa!): Questions. Tässä lisää harjoitusta epäsäännöllisiin imperfekteihin: Irregular Verbs, täällä taas hirmuinen määrä linkkejä adjektiivien vertailua käsitteleviin verkkoharjoituksiin: Adjectives, comparison.

What type of learner are you? Perhaps you forget things if you don’t write them down, make notes in class but don’t read them later, or need to have a lot of breaks. Alternative diets this week, especially Ayurveda. We listened to an expert in the art of Ayurvedic health care, and discussed whether different foods can change our state of mind.  We also did a quiz to find out which Ayurvedic type we are. In small groups we created questionnaires to find out if we are more present-focused or future-focused (tasks 10 a + b on the Time handout). Then it was time for adverbs of frequency (every now and then, rarely, hardly ever, in excercise 4), and vocabulary for free time and hobbies (9a, b and c). More adverbs here: Frequency Adverbs.

ENGLANTIA PERUSTASOLTA ETEENPÄIN PÄIVÄLLÄ

Kielistudiopäivä tänään. Harjoittelimme etenkin k-g, p-b ja t-d -äänteitä (task 8), ääntämisen ja kirjoittamisen suhdetta (9, pronunciation and spelling), sanapainoa (10, word stress) ja intonaatiota (11, intonation). Tarkistimme kotitehtävät 5b, 6A ja 7A, uudeksi tehtäväksi ABC quiz 1 (s. 69). Jos haluat lisää intonaatioharjoitusta, kurkista linkkiä tässä: Intonation.

ENGLANTI 5

Lukuharjoittelimme At a family party -tekstiä parin kanssa ja tarkistimme siihen liittyvät kotitehtävät (1a ja b). Pariin tutustuimme pienten valmiisiin kysymyksiin perustuvien keskustelujen avulla. Uutena tekstinä kävimme What did you wear to the party (s. 12)? Kotitehtävät tällä kertaa erilliseltä monisteelta. Keittiövälineitä kertasimme In my kitchen (3a) -harjoituksessa. This is what was discussed today: When is it OK to lie to a friend or take sometking that doesn’t belong to you? How do you feel when someone has lied to you? We also learned some useful phrases (bald-faced lie, make an excuse, tell a tall tale, etc.) and did some problem solving; would you help a friend cheat in a exam? ENGLANTIA EPÄRÖIVILLE / ENGLISH IN THE MORNING

This week we did a listening excercise about visiting an office and revised vocabulary from the text ”Doctors without borders” by playing a game in groups. If you would like to know more about how to welcome friends at home (informal language) and welcoming someone at the office (formal language), take a look at this link: Welcoming visitors. A new theme was introduced: learning styles. How do you learn new information or revise before tests or exams? Where do you study and do you do it with music? Do you think the same ways of studying are good for everyone? Theme continued next week.

KEEP UP YOUR ENGLISH

The theme today: love and marriage. Should marriages be restricted to one’s own social group? What is the right age to get married? What about divorces; why are divorce rates constantly increasing in the Western world? We listened to a Ugandan lady who thinks polygamy is not a bad thing at all, and also heard a New Zealander, an American and an Indian discussing what they will do with their parents when they get old. ENGLANTIA PERUSTASOLTA ETEENPÄIN

Tiukkaa asiaa tänään. Tarkistimme kotitehtävänä olleen , imperfektin kestomuotoa käsittelevän harjoituksen 4A ja sukelsimme sitten adjektiivien vertailumuotoihin (comparison of adjectives) eli tehtäviin 5 ja 5A (5B kotitehtäväksi!). Melkoisen määrä linkkejä verkkoharjoituksiin löydät täältä: Comparison. Sananlasku All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy on totta englannin opiskelussakin, joten välillä pelattiin joen ylitystä eli adjektiivipeliä. Lisäksi perehdyimme yhdisteverbeihin (6, phrasal verbs) ja sananmuodostukseen (7, word formation), joista tietenkin kotitehtäviä: 6A ja 7A. Yhdisteverbejä voi treenata lisää täällä: Phrasal verbs.

Seder och bruk oli aloitusteemamme tänään eli kyselimme ja vastasimme toistemme uteluihin annettujen verbien pohjalta, ja samalla tulivat ajanmääreetkin käyttöön: När var du senast i Sverige? Hur ofta går du på teater? Vilken tid brukar du komma hem från jobbet? Ajanilmauksista on ristikko täällä: Tidsuttryck, ja sanajärjestystä voi hioa tässä: Ordföljd.
